The DeSoto County Education Foundation took advantage of the most recent partnership to highlight the many projects of which they are involved. Hosting the Chamber of Commerce’s Noontime Networking luncheon on Sept.18, the foundation announced the latest collaborative project — addressing hunger of DeSoto County’s children through the BackPack program.

September is recognized as Hunger Action Month and a new relationship has been formed to provide backpacks of food for children in the elementary and middle school, as well as continuing the Food Pantry at the local high school. Since May, the high school pantry has served more than 600 adults and children.

BackPack volunteers distributed almost 3,500 backpacks to students at Nocatee and Memorial Elementary schools last school year and expect to distribute more than 7,000 backpacks this year with the addition of West Elementary and DeSoto Middle schools.
